Lights, locks, thermostats, AV devices, sensors and many other device types can be controlled through a user's Alexa powered device like the Echo or Dot. This integration relies on the cloud connector addon. More information can be found in the corresponding docs page opens new window. Matching of voice commands to items happens based on the item label e.

If it is not specified, the item will be ignored. It is therefore advisable, to choose labels that can be used to form natural commands. It is important to note that each of these labels needs to be unique to prevent any duplicate issues.

As an example, compare "Alexa, turn on the Kitchen Light" vs. If these settings aren't defined, the skill will either use the item level configuration, if available, to determine these properties, or fallback to en language and SI measurement system, as default values.

The Alexa skill API uses the concept of "endpoints". Endpoints are addressable entities that expose functionality in the form of capability interfaces. A more complex endpoint may be a thermostat which has many capabilities to control and report temperature, setpoints, modes, etc Single items in openHAB can be mapped to single endpoint in Alex through the use of the Alexa metadata.

An simple example of this is a light switch. In the Alexa skill a light switch endpoint implements the "PowerController" interface and exposes a "powerState" property.

Setting this on a single item will create an Alexa endpoint with the spoken addressable name "Light Switch" and map the powerState property to our item. You can ask Alexa to turn "Light Switch" on or off. An example of how this works with other metadata is given in Items Metadata opens new window. This can also be written using metadata labelswhich is a shorthand version of the full Alexa namespace:. A slightly more complex example would be a Light Dimmer. In Alexa this is two different interfaces.

Alexa smart light colors: All 123, listed

To support both types of commands, we need to add both to the item metadata:. You can ask Alexa to "Turn Light Switch. Your item should only be using one of these that best describes the type of device. So for lights this would be the BrightnessController, for roller shades this would be PercentageController. The skill will not prevent adding more then one, but voice control may suffer for that device. You can identify it as the small square chip near the micro USB port:.

Install drivers for the v2 here. You should be able to build and upload the project from the PlatformIO editor. The below instructions are finicky and unless you get the arguments exactly right, the filesystem on your ESP will not work correctly.

Thanks to Richard for pointing this out in the comments. If not, you can download a pre-compiled firmware binary here. On OS X maybe Linux? Be sure to specify the real path to the firmware file. If you have Milight bulbs already, you probably have them paired with an existing device. Rather than unpairing them and re-pairing with the ESP gateway, you can just have the ESP gateway spoof the ID of your existing gateway or remote.

You should see packets start to appear:. To have the ESP gateway spoof it, scroll up to the top and enter it:. The controls should not work as expected.

The bulb should flash on and off if it was successful.

I realized this project would be a lot more immediately useful to people if it just supported the existing Milight UDP protocol. This would allow people to use the existing integrations others have built for OpenHab, Home Assistant, SmartThings, etc. The Web UI has a section to manage gateway servers. Echo begins working as soon as it hears you say the wake word, "Alexa. Hide Questions Show Questions. What's New Amazon Echo. I would rather say "Alexa, turn on the living room lights" than some of the work arounds I have seen where you have to say "Alexa, tell [x] to turn on the lights" etc, but am unsure what the current best way to do this is, as things seem to be changing quickly.

I assume I will need some server in-between emulating Hue lights etc, to translate the commands, running on windows or linux server. I have a windows box I would rather use for this, but could also set up linux, or even a Rasp PI etc.

I have about the same setup. Works great.

Everything explained well on openHAB milight binding wiki. I think I will end up going for the ha-bridge and Domoticz for ease of setup. Yes, that ha-bridge can directly send udp commands to control milights. But since the connection is 'stateless', i think we need something in the middle to, at least, records last command given. Not perfect, but quite effective. Also in NZ, I used echo ha-bridge to a domoticz server. Sounds good. I would much rather repourpose a x86 server than buy more hardware smartthings etcso I guess I will have a look at domoticz vs OpenHab, and have a play with the ha-bridge before my echo arrives.

I tried openhab, but after getting it installed I never got it hooked up to devices and working. I needed an openHAB for noobs guide. I went with domoticz because it was able to be run on a rPi. Its in no way perfect, but it is good enough to run the lights, and will accept commands over http.

I got the impression openhab would be better once setup. But I needed that noobs guide, and couldn't find one. I have come to the same idea while reading about both. I set up the ha bridge and domoticz last night on a virtual machine, and it seems like it will be pretty straight forward.

OpenHAB seems like it may be more powerful, but just for a couple of lights, I don't think I need it. I setup the bridge and domoticz each in their own VM.A while ago I blogged about controlling you Milight smart bulbs from Amazon Echo.

This was done by sending raw UDP packets directly to Milight bridge.

Since a packet consisted only of a few bytes — this was manageable. Then we got v6 of Milight bulbs. But with new features came increase complexity of commands. UDP packets now consist of huge number of bytes and you cannot simple send packet and forget it, response matters too. HA-Bridgewhich is used to emulate Phillips Hue bulbs so Echo can detect the devices, is incapable of such commands. Thankfully it can run external scripts. Enter Node-Milight-Promise.

This is a node module that creates a pretty cool wrapper around raw Milight commands. For example to turn on Zone 1 you can simple call commands. With this in mind we can create a universal controlling script and call it from HA-Bridge passing zone, brightness etc.

Here is an example of such script led. It creates a Milight object with bridge IP address as a parameter. The cool thing about this module — it supports previous version of Milight as well — you just have to specify type parameter. And these commands will be identical for other zones, just the parameter for zone number will change.

Once devices are set up tell Alexa to discover devices. Once she is done, you can call devices by the names you gave them.

How can I install Node-Milight Promise? Christof First you need to install Nodejs. Once Node is installed — create folder for your code an inside that folder run command. This will do actual install of Node-Milight Promise. After that you can create led. This tripped me up for a bit, but it makes sense since I also had to adjust the remote being used in the Limitless app before I had proper control.

Got this working with my 22 v6 Mi-Lights at home via two WiFi controllers. Node-Milight-Promise is a nice find too and got this all up and running on both a Windows 10 box and now a Rapsberry Pi running Jessie. Seems to be some problems getting habridge to link with Google Home, but it works fine via Amazon Echo. Thanks again your articles really helped me get up and running here! Try changing port and use Home again. So no local google home to ha bridge support anymore.Alexa smart light colors come in different shades and hues.
